The speculation has it that Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy will likely bring in former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan as his new defensive coordinator, replacing the fired Bob Sanders.

This is not a shock, and should probably be perceived as a good move.  McCarthy has just had to fire most of his coaches on the defensive side of the ball.  He won't likely get another opportunity, so he has to make the right choice or risk losing his job.  McCarthy was an offensive coordinator in San Francisco under Nolan and knows what he would be getting if he decided to hire him.  Nolan has 11 years of NFL experience as a defensive coordinator with Baltimore, Washington, the Jets and the Giants.  He's experienced in both 4-3 and 3-4 defensive schemes and is said to be flexible enough to employ either, depending on the Packers personnel.

McCarthy can't afford to risk his own neck on a promising, but young coordinator candidate.  He needs somebody with a track record, that'll help turn the defense around right away.  Certainly there are other veteran coaches out there that would fit the bill, but Nolan and McCarthy seem to be a good fit.  If that's what McCarthy is thinking, then he need not hesitate.  Hire Nolan now, before some other team beat's the Packers to the punch.
