Fans that went to Sunday's Big East clash between rivals Marquette & Cincinnati at the Bradley Center were expecting another great battle. What they witnessed was a monumental butt kicking by Marquette. Jerel McNeal scored 26 points, including a school record 7 for 7 from 3-point range and Marquette crushed Cincinnati 84-50.
As a team, Marquette didn't hit 3's at the same clip as McNeal, but they weren't far off. The Golden Eagles (13-2, 2-0 Big East) made 15 of 25 3-pointers (60.0%), tying a school record that dates back to March of 1995 when Marquette hit 9 of 15 in a win over Penn State.
Marquette played outstanding defense as well, shutting down all-Big East guard Deonta Vaughn. Vaughn went scoreless in 37 minutes, the first time that has ever happened to the junior. Cincinnati (10-4, 0-1) attempted 19 treys and hit just 3 of them.
Wesley Matthews added 17 points and Lazar Hayward 16 for Marquette.
