The Menominee Indian Tribe says it should have the support that’s needed for the governor to approve a proposed Kenosha County casino.
Eight of the state’s 11 federally recognized Indian tribes have signed on to a letter sent to Governor Scott Walker this week that announces their support for the Menominee tribe’s proposal. Menominee officials say that super-majority should leave the governor with no question of whether or not to approve the project.
Officials with the Forest County Potawatomi, the Ho-Chunk and the Oneida tribes are not among those who signed the letter. Each of those tribes operates their own casinos in the state and have expressed concerns about the Menominee proposal.
Governor Walker has said one of his criteria for approving the casino is consensus among the state’s tribes.
