Marian University has hired former Badger hockey player Mike Cowan as it's first head women's hockey coach.  Cowan will lead the new Sabres program into their inaugural season of competition in Fond du Lac.

Cowan played college hockey for the Badgers under the legendary Bob Johnson.  He has spent the last eight years as the coach of the Fond du Lac/Waupun girl's high school team.  His team has won state championships in 2004 and 2006 and has had three runnerup finishes.  Cowan's record over this period is 136-41-6.  Cowan has been honored as a member of both the University of Wisconsin Hockey Hall-of-Fame and the state of Wisconsin Hockey Hall-of-Fame.

Marian University will compete furing the 2009-2010 season in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).  The NCHA women's division is currently comprised of Adrian College, Concordia University of Wisconsin, Finlandia University, Lake Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior.
