State Senate Democrats will have a new leader next session. State Senator Mark Miller (D-Monona) has decided to step down as Democratic Leader of the chamber after the end of the current session.

In a statement, Miller says he has been honored to serve in the role during a historic time in the state’s history. The Monona Democrat offered no reason for the decision.

The announcement comes after Democrats lost their briefly held majority in the state Senate following Tuesday’s elections and are expected to return next spring with just 15 seats. It remains uncertain who will take over leadership of the caucus in the next session.
