Despite their first half struggles, the Milwaukee Brewers will have two representatives at this years All-Star Game. Shortstop Jean Segura and outfielder Carlos Gomez will head to the mid-summer classic July 16th at Citi Field in New York as reserves on the National League roster.
Segura isn’t technically a rookie because he had too many at-bats last season, but in his first full year in the Majors, Segura is hitting .321 with 11-homers, 35-RBI, and 26-steals. Segura could end up starting as the only other NL shortstop, Colorado’s Tory Tulowitzki is on the DL and may not be able to play.
Gomez has put together his best year of his 7-year career to this point. He has 13-homers, 41-RBI with 19-steals and leads all of baseball in the sabermetric stat WAR (wins-above-replacement), a number that measures a players importance to his team.Usually when a team struggles, a player can get overlooked for the All-Star honor. Both Gomez and Segura will be making their first all-star appearance. The St. Louis Cardinals led the National League with 5-selections while the Tigers topped the American League with 6-selections.
