The School Board voted 6-3 to begin looking into dissolving the Milwaukee Public School system. Thursday night's vote followed a speech with painted a very grim picture by Superintendent William Andrekopolous about the future finances at MPS. Andrekopolous says restrictions which limit how much money the district is allowed to bring, MPS faces a possible 17% increase in the tax levy.

Additionally, state aid for enrollment is drying up as public schools lose kids to voucher schools, a process he calls unfair. He considers the state's finance system to fund MPS "broken."

The school board has until the end of October to pass a budget and decide on a tax levy. Meanwhile, MPS will consult with the city attorney regarding any possible dissolution of the district.
