There's some money to update aging school busses, but Congress could approve more. New school busses burning low sulpher fuel are pretty clean, according to Dawn Fenton with the D.C. based Diesel Technology Forum . However the age of the average school bus in Wisconsin and elsewhere is ten to fifteen years, and that's where diesel retrofitting can come in. "This is funding that is available through the Department of Natural Resources, that's actually is federal funds through the Department of Transportation that has gone to Wisconsin. There is still a significant amount of money available." On the other hand, Fenton notes that Congress has yet to approve any money for the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, which passed two years ago and was supposed to be funded for a billion dollars over five years. She says Wiscosin Congressman Dave Obey is in key position to appropriate that funding.
