The ranks of the Wisconsin State Patrol have been replenished.

Nineteen new "smokeys" begin their duties this week, either as troopers or inspectors. Sergeant Paul Matl says they just graduated from the State Patrol Academy at Fort McCoy and will be assigned to various areas across the state.

The authorized strength of the patrol is nearly 500 troopers and inspectors.

Matl says, contrary to what some motorists think, officers don't just keep their eyes peeled for speeders. They're responsible for numerous duties, aimed at cutting down the number of accidents.
