Police in Fitchburg are hoping for the best following an early morning stabbing. A 6-year-old girl was attacked by her mother. Lieutenant Todd Stetzer continues to search for a motive. “That’s kind of what we’re trying to figure out, is what circumstances led up to her actions,” Stetzer. “Obviously, it’s pretty disturbing.”

Stetzer said the woman went to a neighbor’s apartment around 2:30 Monday morning, saying she had stabbed her daughter. No other children were in the apartment. The girl’s injuries are life threatening. The mother also stabbed herself, although her injuries are less severe. Stetzer said police have had contact with the woman in the past, but nothing involving child welfare.
