Today is White Cane Safety Day.

Drivers are urged to watch out for people who can't see very well, if at all.

Stephanie Marquiswith the state Health Department says today brings awareness, but it's important to pay attention every time you're on the road behind the wheel. Marquis says motorists need to get into the habit of watching out, not only for pedestrians, but also for those with a white cane or guide dog trying to cross the street.

Blind or visually impaired pedestrians can be identified by their use of a cane or walking stick that is white or white trimmed with red, or by the use of a dog guide. Approximately 200,000 blind or visually impaired individuals live in Wisconsin .
