The head of an abortion rights group applauds the decision to offer second trimester abortions in Madison. Lisa Subeck, Executive Director of NARAL Pro Choice Wisconsin , says it's important for the procedure to continue to be offered in Madison, where the only doctor offering second trimester abortions is due to retire.

"It is critical that women who are already making a really tough decision, going through a medical procedure . . . need access in their community," says Subeck. "You wouldn't send someone to Milwaukee to have their gall bladder removed."

Subeck applauds the unanimous vote by the board of the Madison Surgery Center . "They know what's right from a health care perspective for women in Madison and women in south-central Wisconsin," says Subeck. "They've stepped up and should be applauded for stepping up and filling this void."

The Surgery Center is a joint venture between UW Hospital and Clinics, the UW Medical Foundation, and Meriter Hospital. Abortions will be offered for women who are up to twenty-two weeks pregnant. Pro-life groups vow to demonstrate outside the clinic.
