A legislative critic of a new UW admissions policy says he's not backing off. Representative Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) says admissions criteria like community service, motivation, special talents and student experiences can't disguise the real intentions of UW administrators. "They are hiding behind a lot of other verbiage in their policy, to get at race-based admissions," says Nass.

Nass says the university is getting away from test scores and grade point averages as the most important factors in determining which students are admitted. The UW System has scheduled a video conference session on January 29th to hear comments on the new policy. Nass says that will be little more than "a pep rally for race-based admissions," and says he's not backing off on the issue. Nass notes that the new policy has already been scheduled for approval by the UW Board of Regents at its upcoming meeting in February.
