The new Central Library in downtown Madison opens to the general public after a series of private and public fundraising events at the new facility.

Proceeds from the various events will help the foundation reach its $9 million campaign goal of private funds in support of the $30 million project.

Nearly two years after the old shabby library closed, the shiny new and updated facility is ready for readers. Though, the Central Library has more than just books. The new branch offers something for individuals with a variety of interests.

A pre-opening party Thursday night brought about 1,500 people to the new library, just a block away from the state Capitol building.

The library officially opens Saturday, with a public Grand Opening Weekend going on September 21-22.
