It’s called: “Bec-Key Lime Pie.” The new ice cream flavor is named in honor of new University of Wisconsin Chancellor Rebecca “Becky” Blank.
The former Obama White House official, who became the new Madison campus leader a few weeks ago, recently got the scoop on the new flavor at UW-Madison’s ice cream plant.
It was five years ago when “Strawbiddy Swirl” debut on campus in honor of then-chancellor Biddy Martin.
Bec-Key Lime Pie ice cream is a combination of key lime pie flavored with graham cracker swirl. It will be available campus-wide through September. Bill Klein, Babcock Dairy Plant manager, says 300 gallons were made and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
The Babcock Dairy Plant produces about 75 flavors a year. Four “feature flavors” are offered per month. The key ingredient to Babcock ice cream’s success is freshness. New flavors offered for a limited time help create demand.
Bec-Key Lime Pie was selected from more than 400 suggestions in a contest. Mary Jensen came up with the name. She’ll receive a gift of ice cream for her suggestion. Other suggestions included Blank-enberry, Berry Becky Badger, Rebecca of Buckybrook Farm, Rebeccappuccino, Teach Me How to Becky.
