A new law in Wisconsin makes it more difficult to put out signs for garage and rummage sale signs.

Deb Brucaya with the DOT says they can be a hazard to crews that mow the medians along highways. It can also be dangerous for those placing the signs, since they may have to dodge traffic to place them in a highly visible area.

The new law says, if they’re in the right of way, they’re considered an illegal sign. It carries a $10 fine for an individual and $50 for businesses.

State Senator Jim Sullivan (D-Wauwatosa), who authored the measure, says the bill really goes after those businesses who literally fill public areas with printed signs for advertising. He says signs offering money for working from home, online dating, or a number of other business ventures don’t belong along roads. He says they’re a nuisance.

Individual violators face a $10 fine, while businesses could be fined up to $50.
