A new year often means a new diet. Beware of fads, says Barbara Troy, Clinical Assistant Professor of Dietetics at Marquette University. She says the number one thing new dieters need to do is "really take a hard look at lifestyles." Troy says that includes exercise and stress management.

Although quality of food is important but the dietician stresses quantity.

"Really anything can be eaten in a healthy diet it's a matter of portion sizes," says Troy.

She suggests tricks like using a smaller plate to prevent overeating. Also when eating fast food, adults may want to consider ordering off the kids menu.

The dietician says research shows there is no magic formula in weight loss, different things will work for different people.
