Retired police officers in Wisconsin may soon be "carrying concealed" — or not. Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen this week granted the first permit for a retired law enforcement officer to carry a concealed weapon. Jeff Wiswell with the Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association says Van Hollen has done what he's charged to do, under terms of a federal law passed in 2004, which allows law enforcement agencies to issue the permits. The state's 72 sheriffs departments and some 450 police departments have no uniform standard, for issuing permits to retired officers. Wiswell says legislation establishing such statewide standards has stalled in the legislature, so it's up to each department to decide whether or not to issue the permits.
