The Governor wants to stop using coal to generate heat for some state facilities.

As the UW-Madison and Department of Administration consider new ways to fuel state-owned heating plants in Madison, Governor Jim Doyle says coal is not an option. Doyle says the state needs to move away from that energy source.

Instead, Doyle wants them to consider cleaner alternatives as they look to replace at least three facilities in the Madison area. However, don't expect to see wind farms on Lake Mendota. Doyle says natural gas or biomass are more practical options.

A state study released Friday outlines 13 different alternatives to burning coal in Madison facilities. Officials at the UW-Madison say they will evaluate those options, but also note that they are complicated and costly when compared to coal.
