An officer-involved shooting on Racine’s southwest side leads to a man’s death.

Police were dispatched to an apartment complex Sunday afternoon about a suicidal party, and after getting inside, made contact with a man holding a weapon. A release indicates the man refused several orders to drop the weapon, and because “his actions continued to threaten the officers,” he was shot.

Fire Department paramedics were allowed in, used life-saving efforts on the man all the way to the hospital, but he died.

Neighbors described the man as gentle, but with mental health issues.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Department will do the review of the shooting because of new state law that requires an outside agency to look at all officer-involved shootings. Ultimately, the Racine County District Attorney’s office will make a ruling.
