A wounded police officer prompted a manhunt in Taylor County Sunday night.

The incident started at about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Highways 13 and 102 near Westboro. A Taylor County deputy made contact with someone who was in violation of a court order. The Sheriff’s Department says the 27-year-old man fired a gun, wounding the deputy, and then fled the area.

Extra officers were called in from six other counties as tactical teams conducted a manhunt, while citizens on the scene assisted the wounded officer until medical help arrived. The officer was flown to a hospital where he is now recovering.

The suspect was apprehended about three hours later, and was transported to the Lincoln County jail, where he awaits a bond hearing.

Traffic in that area was detoured while law enforcement tactical teams searched the area. The man’s name and further details about the incident are expected to be released Monday.
