New Years resolutions often involve getting in shape, they often lead to failure. Chris Geiser, Marquette University's Athletic Training Education Program Director, says people often "over do it" at first. He suggests starting slowly and allowing your tendons and muscles to adapt to the new stress. This is achieved by keeping your exercise sessions shorter initially and then building up to longer work outs. Rest days are also important.

Find an activity you enjoy and perhaps make it a social interaction, says Geiser.

"The more you enjoy what you are doing and the more you incorporate it into your life, the likely you are to stick with some things," says the fitness expert.

Geiser also suggests getting advice from a professional, which could range from a personal trainer to a physical therapist. This element along with goal setting and self rewarding are also important.
