One man is dead, another is in custody, and a police officer was shot, during a shooting and standoff in downtown Neenah on Saturday.
Police Chief Kevin Wilkinson said a man went to Eagle Nation Cycles at about 9 a.m. Saturday, and fired at least one shot at someone. He said there were also reports that the suspect took hostages.
Wilkinson said one man later died, after walking out of the business, with a gun. He said the man did not follow orders from officers to drop the weapon, and at least one officer shot him.
Wilkinson said they do not know if he was also shot at by the suspect inside the business.
Wilkinson said earlier, about a half hour after police arrived, they received specific information that the hostages were in immediate danger of being killed, so SWAT officers went into the building. One officer was shot in his ballistic helmet during that attempted entry, which Wilkinson said kept it from being a fatal injury. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.
Wilkinson says the hostages were able to leave the building sporadically. After police negotiated with the suspect for a few hours, the man surrendered around 1 p.m. by walking out of the building.
Police have not yet released the names of any of the people involved.
