A man is dead and two deputies are injured after a six-hour standoff that began when the man shot at a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy. Three officers were called just after noon to a home in the Town of Disco. They were asked to check on a man who was reportedly depressed.
Sheriff Duane Waldera said the 50-year-old man started shooting after the deputies talked to him from outside the house. One deputy was wounded, and was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Another deputy was said to be hit by shrapnel, and was treated at a hospital and later released.
The man then held himself inside while authorities blocked off traffic and evacuated neighbors. The sheriff said officers fired tear-gas into the house about 6:30 P.M., and they went in to find that the man had shot himself to death. No names have been released. The state Justice Department is investigating.
