The DNR is seeing a strong response to its Operation Deer Watch program.
Since it began on August 1st, the DNR effort to get the public to report deer sightings is seeing a lot of traffic. Program coordinator Brian Dhuey says about 2,600 reports have been logged on the agency’s website so far, with an average of about 100 a day.
Information from the public will be used when the agency calculates the size of Wisconsin’s deer herd later this year, which ultimately helps to shape state hunting policies. Dhuey says they want to hear about all types of sightings, although they’re most interested in hearing about does that have fawns with them.
Dhuey says it’s easy to file a report on the DNR website by just looking for the “Operation Deer Watch” banner and clicking on it.
Sighting reports are being collected through the end of this month.
