The 15th annual Gift of Life ceremony takes place at the executive residence.

The event is held every year at the Governor’s mansion to recognize the families of donors for their generous gift.

“It’s an incredibly difficult time for the families … we hope that this remembrance of them is something that gives them peace and helps them to remember their loved ones and lets us show our appreciation to them.”

The Wisconsin Donor Network ‘s Colleen McCarthy says Wisconsin is a leader in organ donations. Still, almost 100,000 people nationwide are waiting for an organ, with approximately 1500 people on Wisconsin’s waiting list. McCarthy points out that organ donors and tissue donors can really make a huge impact in the lives of recipients.

“One organ donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation. One tissue donor can save up to 50 or 60 lives, so just one person can make an immense difference.”

You’re probably familiar with the notation on your driver’s license to be an organ donor after you die, but McCarthy explains, you can also donate right now. Living donors can give a portion of a liver, lung or even a kidney to a person in need. It’s important to put the orange dot on your driver’s license, contact your local transplant center, and talk with your family members about your decision.

The ceremony gets under way at 10:00 am at the Governor’s Mansion.
