With antiwar referendums abounding on local ballots November 7th, voters in Ozaukee County will be asked to stay the course. Warren Stumpe is a co-author of the resolution, a recently retired member of the Ozaukee County Board, and a veteran with 30 years military service. He and current board member Robert Sopko drafted the referendum question as a response to antiwar referenda which are on the ballot in communities around the state. Stumpe said those referenda have been put on local ballots by "fringe groups. . . that are not supportive of our military." Ozaukee County voters will be asked whether they support war, including war in Iraq and Afghanistan, "until such time as organized terrorism is eliminated and citizens of all countries can be assured of their safety to go about their tasks of everyday life."

Stumpe said he has no idea whether the resolution will be approved. The state elections board does not keep track of local referendums, but at least 13 — mostly antiwar — are known to be on the ballot in communities around the state. Voters in two Wood County communities — Wisconsin Rapids and Pittsville — will be asked whether there ought to be an impeachment investigation of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
