The Green Bay Packers red zone deficiencies in 2006 show that they are in serious need of some playmakers.
Inside the 20 yard line this season, the Packers finished with the second worst touchdown percentage, scoring only 16 touchdowns in 49 trips, which equates to a 32.7% success rate.
The Packers got little from the tightend position this season and Donald Driver was their only true playmaking receiver. They'll need to improve on that in both free agency in the draft. The big ticket player that could be available through free agency is Kansas City tight end Tony Gonzalez. Gonzalez has an option to void his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he had no doubt the front office had its eyes open for players who can make some thing happen offensively. But the coach also said he couldn't say whether or not GM Ted Thompson would pay special attention to the offense only.
The Packers ability to draw big name free agents may also be contingent on whether or not Brett Favre returns. If Favre retires, there's little reason for a free agent to want to come to Green Bay, not knowing what they'd be getting into.
