A Sauk Prairie police officer who’s accused of stealing opiate pain medications has submitted his resignation. A criminal complaint alleges that Matthew Alt went to the police department on his days off, and emptied a drop box designated for the disposal of unwanted or expired prescription pills. A search of Alt’s home turned up nearly 500 pills, all some form of the opiate painkiller, hydrocodone. The 38-year-old officer had been on paid leave pending an internal investigation.
WKOW reports that the Sauk Prairie Police Commission has reached an agreement with Alt and the Wisconsin Professional Police Association to accept his resignation, which was effective last Friday, December 11th. Alt faces drug possession and misconduct charges in Sauk County court. Alt was a 17 year veteran of the department, which serves the Sauk County communities of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac.
