A special committee at the Capitol is taking a closer look at transportation.

A Legislative Council study committee began work Thursday on efforts to develop statewide standards for Regional Transportation Authorities. Committee Chairman State Representative Al Ott (R-Forest Junction) says the effort will focus on creating a clear and basic framework for local governments that want to create an RTA.

RTA agreements are seen as the next step in helping public transportation connect communities.

Concerns have been raised about the possible taxing powers of RTAs. Ott says that's one of many concerns they'll be trying to balance through the hearing process. He says taxpayers need to be protected, but local governments need flexibility in order to meet different transportation needs.

The panel is expected to meet through the fall and recommend legislation early next year.
