Wisconsin could see its role in genetic research expanded greatly, under a partnership announced at the Marshfield Clinic on Friday.

Collaborative research between the Marshfield Clinic, UW School of Medicine, UW-Milwaukee, and Medical College of Wisconsin will focus on exploring the role of genetics in medical treatments. Governor Jim Doyle says the combined resources of those institutions will help make personalized health care a reality.

Governor Doyle says the effort could make Wisconsin a leader in basing medical treatment on our DNA, which he sees as the next step in improving the quality of health care.

Doyle says the partnership could also bring benefits to Wisconsin similar to those seen with stem cell research. That could mean new companies that attract high tech jobs and additional investments into the state.

The public and private partnership is also expected to attract federal research dollars.
