A number of Wisconsinites are buying concealable firearms now that state law will make the practice of concealed carry legal. Jeff Nass, head of the state’s NRA charter- WI-Force – says a lot of Wisconsinites were waiting for Governor Scott Walker to sign the bill before flocking to the gun stores, as the proposal had been twice vetoed by previous Governor Jim Doyle.

People have also been seeking out firearms training, a requirement under the new law. Meanwhile the state Department of Justice warns some firearms courses may not fulfill the training mandate, as the agency is still finalizing rules. However, Nass notes the law has outlined clear options for instruction.

“There are a few courses that I may have some concerns with but as a general rule any nationally certified course or recognized course is going to qualify.”

The statute’s language allows permit applicants to pass a course in firearms training, firearms safety or hunter safety.

The new law will take effect November 1.
