Many state employees could be getting their first pay raise in five years.

Under a plan released Tuesday by Governor Scott Walker’s administration, most state and University of Wisconsin employees would receive a one percent wage increase each year, for the next two years. The plan also calls for a $0.25 hourly wage hike for state employees making under $15 an hour.

If approved by a legislative committee on Wednesday, it would be the first pay hike for most state workers since 2008. The increase would take effect this coming Sunday.

In a statement, Governor Walker said the recommendation is the result of “tough, but prudent, decisions” made over the last two years, which have allowed the state to invest in its employees.
