An airplane was able to land safely, after its landing gear clipped a moving semi truck on Interstate 94 in Racine County.

A 65-year old Racine man, piloting a private plane on a sightseeing trip with his wife, tried landing at Sylvania Airport less than an hour after takeoff, but clipped a southbound semi truck, ripping off the back landing gear. The pilot aborted the original landing attempt, circled the airport, and then put the plane down safely in a grassy section of airport property.

Neither occupant of the plane was injured.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Department says the truck was never found, but a secondary accident resulted from debris left on the roadway by the original impact.

The FAA will be investigating.
