Nearly one-third of Americans will return at least one holiday gift this season, according to the National Retail Federation.

Shoppers: make sure you understand the return policy before buying anything. Consumer Protection Administrator Janet Jenkins says “There are no laws in Wisconsin that specifically regulate return or refund policies.”

Return policies, which can vary among items, include cash back, in-store credit, exchanges or no adjustment at all. Clearance or closeout items may be marked “final sale – no returns.” You might have to work directly with the manufacturer for a resolution after purchasing a defected product.

Some guidelines for hassle-free returns include getting a gift receipt, don’t dawdle if returning an item, leave the price tag on, and return the item in its original packaging. Be sure to get everything in writing prior to placing an order. Same goes for shopping online and phone orders. Be especially cautious of sellers outside of the United States.
