Marshfield fire officials are estimating damage at more than three-million dollars from an explosion early Monday at a commercial door factory. Fire Chief Jim Schmidt said the estimate is three times his initial summation – after assistance from the state Department of Criminal Investigation. “They’re more commonly referred to as the stare fire marshall’s office,” said Schmidt. “They’ll take a lot of photos and do a lot of interviews. They have some tools and some capabilities that we don’t have.”

The blast at Marshfield Door Systems occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. in a pressurized metal tank that’s used to make the core for fireproof doors. Debris from Monday’s explosion was sent flying up to a half-mile. Only one plant worker suffered minor injuries–but it could’ve been much worse. The explosion occurred 15 minutes after eight workers in that area of the plant had ended their shift, and the next shift had not come in yet.
