A chemical often found in reusable plastic water bottles may be harmful, according to the U.S. government's latest finding released Tuesday. The National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. National Institute of Health, says use of plastic bottles containing Biphonel A (BPA) may be linked to breast cancer, prostate cancer and behavioral effects in children. The report also mentions "negligible concern" that exposure to BPA causes birth defects and neonatal or fetal death. This report is the latest word on what has been a series of tests from various agencies on BPA.

Many shoppers in Madison aren't taking their chances. Adam Remuse, Assistant Manager of Fontana Sports, says customers often ask for non-BPA plastic bottles or aluminum versions.

"We get a lot of students who are definitely concerned and mothers of course."

He also says the mothers sometimes look for non-plastic "sippy cups" for their kids. Alternatives to standard BPA plastic bottles can cost up to four times as much, according to Remuse.
