A Plover man accused in the beating death of his stepfather will be getting a mental competency exam. On Monday in Portage County court, 32-year-old Andrew Pray plead not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to a count of first degree homicide.

Pray is accused of striking 77-year-old Christopher Bonnstetter three or four times with a baseball bat, as he lay resting on the living room floor on May 26th. His mother was watching television in the room, and was unable to help her husband. When police came to the scene, Pray gave himself up and responded to police questions with “no comment.”

Bonnstetter was removed from life support and died on June 3rd.

Pray will be back in court for a status conference October 6th.
