Congressional Democrats are considering a procedural trick that could allow them to end the government shutdown. The move would allow them to force a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives by essentially hijacking a Republican bill and inserting the language of a continuing resolution to fund the government.

The move would require 218 signatures on a petition calling for a vote, which U.S. Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI) believes Democrats should be able to get. “Last time I looked, it was 21 Republicans who said they would vote for it. Unless they’re not telling the truth back home, we have an opportunity to pass it.”

Pocan believes all it will take to end the shutdown is to get a vote in the House on a clean continuing resolution. He says “what we need are the adults, especially in the Republican Party, to stand up to the Tea Party and move something forward.”
