Stevens Point evened its head-to-head battle with top-ranked Whitewater, knocking off the Warhawks 72-69 in men’s college basketball action in the WIAC on Wednesday night.
The Pointers shot 58% from the field, getting a game-high 22 points from senior forward Jordan Lutz. Whitewater started the day No. 2 in the WIAC in three-point field-goal defense (.314), but the Pointers made 9 of 16 from distance (56.3%).
The Warhawks saw their 13 game winning streak come to an end as the Pointers moved into first place, a half-game in front of the Warhawks in the WIAC. The two teams split the season series after Whitewater won the first game in the series in January.
Stevens Point (19-4, 13-1 WIAC) has two games left to play. Whitewater (19-3, 12-1) has three games left to play.
The Warhawks had four players in double figures, led by senior forward Steve Egan with 16 points.
