Do Wisconsin residents want new mining regulations? Not according to a new poll commissioned by the League of Conservation Voters. The poll conducted for the environmental group by Public Policy Polling finds 49 percent of respondents opposed to changes in state regulation of mining, 34 percent in favor.
The poll was conducted over the weekend, in the wake of Friday’s daylong public hearing at the Capitol on a bill which has already passed the state Assembly and which now faces an uncertain future in the state Senate, where at least one Republican has already said he can’t support the measure as written.
The contentious issue was due to be considered by a specially appointed Senate committee, but Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald pulled the plug on that and urged his colleagues to pass the Assembly bill.
