William Thorn, Chairman of Marquette University's Journalism Department, says Americans will see a common theme of "hope" with the philosophy of Pope Benedict the 16th during his U.S. tour.

Thorn believes Benedict will stay away from American partisan politics. Thorn notes that even in Italy the Pope is careful not to get closely involved in political comments.

If Benedict takes on issues like abortion or divorce, it will be with "reconciliation," meaning reaching out to those who've been personally involved with these events.

"His goal is to find a way to help them find a way back to the church rather than scold them or that sort."

Dr. Thorn will be attending the official White House welcoming ceremony on Wednesday. The Pope will also address the United Nations during his 5 day tour.
