A Madison doctor is being praised following his death from injuries he suffered in an ambulance crash in Fond du Lac County this week. Dr. Stanley Phillips was a neonatal doctor on his way to Appleton with a crew to pick up an infant patient when the ambulance crashed off Highway 26 south of Rosendale. He was flown to Theda Clark Regional Medical Center in Neenah where he died Thursday night.

Dr. Ray Georgen is the Medical Director for Theda’s Trauma Center. He said the 32-year-old doctor’s death is the equivalent of dying in the line of duty. “In our world this is as close as perishing from friendly fire as you get,” Georgen said.

Phillips had just begun a fellowship at the UW-Hospital. Georgen said his death is a loss for the thousands of patients he would have seen during his lifetime. But his last act will impact lives. He is an organ donor. “His last act was to give the gift of life to many,” he said, adding that some of those receiving organs from Phillips will be children.

Phillips was one of four medical workers injured. A nurse practitioner and a respiratory therapist were both treated at hospitals and later released. Nurse Marianne Davidson had surgery Thursday. A 62-year-old man who drove the ambulance was not hurt.
