The Weston mother accused in her daughter's prayer death fainted during the trial's kick off Saturday. Lelani Neumann fainted just as prosecutors described the final hours of 11-year-old Madeline Kara's life.
Paramedics checked Neumann out but did not take her to the hospital. She complained of not being able to feel her arms or legs but said she had recovered enough to continue. Opening statements were delayed for 40 minutes.
Prosecutors have charged Neumann with reckless homicide saying she should have known to take her dying diabetic daughter to the hospital rather than relying on faith healing and prayer. The death occured Easter 2008.
Nuemann's attorneys say the accused believed she was "doing the right thing" for her daughter. Judge Vincent Howard will not allow the defense to call a Texas faith healer as an expert witness. It's not clear how the court's decision changes the defense's strategy.
Family members are expected to testify Monday.
