State emergency management officials are urging residents to ‘be a hero’ this September by helping their families prepare for disasters.

September is Preparedness Month, and Tod Pritchard with Wisconsin Emergency Management says taking some simple precautions at home and with your family can help save lives. Pritchard says “you never know when a crisis is going to arise, when you’ll need to protect yourself and your family, so planning now for those emergencies, you will be a hero when the time comes.”

Pritchard says you should make a family plan for what to do in an emergency, which details how to get in touch and where to meet. Putting together an emergency supply kit for your home and vehicle should also be on the list. Those kits should include items such as non-perishable food, fresh water, and hand-cranked radio.

Pritchard says you should also identify reliable sources of local information that are helpful before, during, and after an emergency.

While you can’t always predict when a disaster will hit, Pritchard says Wisconsin residents should have a pretty good idea of what can happen when blizzards, flooding, and tornadoes hit the state.
