It’s a whole new ballgame for Wisconsin voters in today’s local primaries – the first in which they’ll be required to show identification under terms of a law signed by Governor Scott Walker last summer. “They basically have to have some form of valid ID,” says Dane County Clerk Karen Peters. “It’s very specific, like a Wisconsin driver’s license or Wisconsin ID. Some people may think that their out-of-state driver’s license will work, and that does not work.”

Peters says a lot of preparation has gone into these elections, including training for those who’ll be working the polls. A legal challenge to the Voter ID law is still pending, but a judge declined to issue an injunction blocking it from being in effect for today.

In addition to a driver’s license or state issued identification card, voters may use college ID cards which meet criteria established by the state, military and tribal ID cards, and passports.
