Investigators in Fond du Lac County say they now have a prime suspect in a 23-year-old homicide case, although no arrests have been made at this time.
Pictures of the 60-year-old suspect’s hands have been sent to a state crime lab for comparison to physical evidence gathered from Berit Beck’s van. Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink says the evidence shows that the Kenosha man, who has a physically deformed hand and was a truck driver at the time of Beck’s disappearance, was “intimately involved in the interior of the back of the van.”
The then 18-year-old Beck of Sturtevant went missing in July of 1990. The van she was last seen driving turned up a short time later in the parking lot of a Fond du Lac Kmart. Her body was found the next month in a ditch near Waupun.
No charges have been filed in connection with her murder, but Fink expressed confidence that the man is a “prime suspect” during a news conference on Monday morning. Fink said “when I have physical evidence inside of a vehicle that a young lady was in prior to her abduction and maybe at the time of her death, I would call that a suspect…I would call that a prime suspect.”
