A UW-Oshkosh professor is in hot water after encouraging students to sign a recall petition against a Republican state Senator during class in early March.

UW-Oshkosh officials say they investigated the claim against Professor Stephen Richards, and took “appropriate action” against him.

Senate President Mike Ellis says he wants a better explanation of the punishment. The Neenah Republican says in addition to politicking on state time, the professor encouraged people from outside of Sen. Randy Hopper’s district to sign the recall petition anyway.

Ellis says state employees, like college professors, shouldn’t be engaging in political efforts while they are on the job.

UW-Oshkosh officials say they’ve talked with the students who complained about the professor’s actions, and there haven’t been any additional problems.
