As the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association gears up to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2014, the group is launching a new effort aimed at improving farm tourism in the state.

The campaign is designed to help farmers attract tourists to their operations. WATA President Steve Peterson says people are taking shorter vacations and are also looking for different things to do, “so we think that’s going to play really well under the farmers, because they can get them in there one day, and the next day they go to another farm.”

Peterson says activities like corn mazes and apple picking can appeal to a wide variety of tourists, but many farmers need help figuring out how to reach their audience. He says that’s why WATA plans to hold educational sessions across the state this spring to help them learn how to market their farms as attractions for families to visit.
