Parents would have more time to decide whether to turn over a newborn child, if a state lawmaker gets his way.

Republican Rep. Dale Kooyenga wants to expand the safe haven law, to give parents 30 days. Right now, they have 72 hours to give up a child, with no questions asked.

The Wauwatosa Republican says some mothers are still in the hospital when the current window runs out. Under the current law, parents can turn over a newborn at a hospital, or to police, firefighters, and EMT’s. Kooyenga wants to include health care clinic staff as well.
